Cold Rolled Steel Strip Characteristics

Compared with hot-rolled strip steel (see hot-rolled broad strip steel production process, hot-rolled narrow strip steel production), the rolling process for cold-rolled strip steel has the following characteristics:

(1) Process lubrication and cooling are used to reduce the deformation resistance during rolling and to cool the rolls;

(2) High-tension rolling is used to reduce the deformation resistance and maintain the stability of the rolling process. The average unit tension value used is 10% to 60% of the yield strength of the material, generally not more than 50%;

(3) The use of multi-stage rolling. As cold rolling makes the material produce work hardening, when the total deformation reaches 60% to 80%, it becomes difficult to continue the deformation. For this reason, an intermediate annealing is carried out so that rolling can continue after the material is softened. In order to obtain the required thin strip, such intermediate annealing may be carried out several times. The rolling between the two intermediate annealing is called a rolling process. The annealing of cold-rolled strip is carried out in continuous annealing furnaces with protective gases or in hood-type annealing furnaces. Cold-rolled strip can be as thick as 0.05 mm and cold-rolled foil as thick as 0.001 mm
